60 rai (roughly 24 acres) of land here at Jiamjit Farm is given over to the production of rice. We grow the world famous Oryza Sativa variety of rice, better known as 'Jasmin rice', renowned as the best flavoured and textured rice in the world.
Because of the climate here in North East Thailand and the slightly longer growing period of Jasmine rice, we only have one rice harvest per year.

We cultivate our rice by using traditional methods. First of all we plant the seeds into small seed beds, then when they are old enough, usually after about 2-3 weeks, they will be transferred to the rice paddy. Before we do this, we plough the fields, then we set the young seedlings into the field. After this is done we flood the rice paddies.

This simple method requires sound planning and servicing of the water damming and channeling, but reduces the growth of weeds and pests, and it deters vermin too. While the flooding is not necessary in order to grow rice, this is the preffered method as other methods require higher effort in weed and pest control as well as a different approach to fertilizing the soil.

After 3 months of growing, the rice is ready to be harvested. We use manual labourers in order to harvest our rice, which can take up to 2 weeks. Finally the rice grains are dried before being packed into sacks and sold on to local markets and restaurants.

In a typical season we manage to yield between 5-6 tonnes of rice per year.
