Our most recent innovation is the large scale production of sunflowers and sunflower seeds. To grow well, sunflowers need lots of sunshine, something that we at Jiamjit are fortunate enough to have lots of. We grow sunflowers during the dry season, from November until around April / May. Sunflowers grow best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with a lot of mulch, so we have to work hard to provide these necessary conditions. Currently we have about 15 rai of land being used for sunflower cultivation

Sunflowers can be used for many, many products, but the most important one we produce is sunflower seeds. All of our sunflower seeds are extracted from the sunflowers, roasted in ovens on location, then processed and packaged on the farm for sale to local suppliers. Sunflower seeds are a popular snack in Thailand.

Our second most important product is sunflower oil, which can be used for cooking and to produce margarine and bio diesel, amongst other things. We sell a large quantity of sunflower oil each year to local suppliers. The cake left over after the seeds have been processed for oil is used as livestock feed. We use it both for our own livestock, and also to sell to other local farmers.

Other uses of sunflowers include the making of a peanut butter alternative, called 'Sunbutter'. This is a popular food in the United States, Russia, China and some European countries such as Germany. This is something that we are looking to branch into soon. Sunflowers can also be used to produce latex, although as of yet this is something we do not do at Jiamjit Farm.
